About the FreeLING Foundation
Fundacja FreeLING – the FreeLING Foundation – is a Polish non-profit organization that was founded in 2014. Our main statutory goal is to diversify training opportunities for translators and interpreters. To achieve this goal, we offer lectures and workshops and participate in projects related to the translation industry. IOur activities are designed to pay special attention to small languages, where training opportunities on the commercial market are limited. This focus on small languages also served as the starting point of our organization: FreeLING was founded by four Polish-Dutch translators looking for ways to improve their professional skills.
Every year, FreeLING holds a number of workshops and training seminars on a wide range of topics: from medical terminology to legal processes, technical translations and quality assessment. We invite trainers from Poland and abroad who are both active translators and experts in the selected field. For smaller languages, we often choose the “translators train translators” approach, which means that the trainer prepares the training content and then plays the role of moderator and guide in the discussions that develop during the workshop. This has proven to be an excellent way to work out standards and good practices for translators of small languages who seldom have extensive dictionaries and other language tools at their disposal.
Our representatives also attend conferences and take part in working parties and discussion groups on translation-related topics. We actively support and cooperate with other organizations and associations to improve working conditions for translators and interpreters. Amongst others, FreeLING is actively engaged in projects related to the implementation of data protection in the daily work of translators and interpreters.
We are convinced that this cooperation, both locally and internationally, is crucial to addressing the challenges the translation industry faces. We would be happy to join any projects that help us achieve our statutory goals: improving the skills and competences of translators and interpreters.
